Subject of the commemorative coin:
25th anniversary of the founding of the European Monetary Institute (EMI)
Description of the design:
The inner part of the piece features, on the right-hand side, a portrait of Alexandre Lamfalussy, the first President of the EMI, with his name below. On the left-hand side, the abbreviation EMI is central with the year 1994 above it, referring to the date of the Institute’s foundation and the appointment of Lamfalussy as its first President. Below “EMI” are several coins falling on top of each other, with, from top to bottom, the inscriptions €, “ECU” and “BEF”. Given that this is a Belgian issue, “BEF” was chosen, the abbreviation of Belgium’s former national currency. The purpose of this representation is to symbolise the transition from national currencies to a single European currency, the euro, as the EMI focused primarily on the creation of the European System of Central Banks, including the ECB and the new currency. The inscription “European Monetary Institute” appears on the upper left-hand side of the coin. As the Royal Dutch Mint will be striking the coins, the Utrecht mint mark, the staff of Mercury, is on the left side with the Belgian mint master mark, the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele. The country code BE and the year 2019 are on the bottom. The initials LL, which refer to the designer of the coin, Mr. Luc Luycx, are on the right. The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted along the outer ring of the coin.
