Subject of the commemorative coin:
10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union

Description of the design:
The coin features a crudely drawn figure merging into the € symbol. The coin aims to express the idea that a single currency and, by extension, the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is the final chapter in the long history of trade and economic integration in Europe. The coin, which will be issued by each euro area country, will bear the name of the country (not shown here) and the inscription 'EMU 1999-2009' in the respective language(s). The design was chosen from five shortlisted designs by citizens of the European Union who cast their votes online. The design was created by George Stamatopoulos, an engraver at the Coin Department of the Bank of Greece. The 12 stars of the European Union are depicted on the outer ring.
