The “Holstentor”, the historic city gate of Lübeck, is depicted in the centre of the coin, with the word “Schleswig-Holstein” underneath, the first of the sixteen federal states of Germany to be commemorated with a commemorative coin. The engraver’s initials “HH” are shown to the right of the image, with one of the letters “A”, “D”, “F”, “G” or “J” as the mint mark to the left. The year of issue, 2006, the twelve stars of the European Union and the words “Bundesrepublik Deutschland” are depicted around the outer edge.
