Subject of the commemorative coin:
70th anniversary of General Charles de Gaulle's roll call on June 18, 1940
Description of the design:
The coin commemorates the 70th anniversary of the appeal (“Appel du 18 juin”) made by General de Gaulle, leader of the Free French Forces, on the BBC on 18 June 1940 after the fall of France. Addressing the French people, de Gaulle declared that the war was not over. The speech is considered to have sparked the French Resistance movement and the beginning of its fight against the occupation of France during World War II.
The central part of the coin shows General De Gaulle, in uniform and bareheaded, in front of a microphone typical of the period, reading out the appeal; a reference to the issuing country (‘RF’) is cleverly incorporated into the image. At the top is the year ‘2010’ and below that ‘70 ANS’ (70 YEARS) and ‘APPEL 18 JUIN’ (APPEL 18 JUNE). The ring around the central part of the coin features the 12 stars of the European flag.
