Subject of the commemorative coin:
2004 Olympic Games in Athens
Description:
The twelve stars of the European Union on the outer part surround an image of an ancient statue of a discus thrower (designed by Myron) about to throw the discus. The pedestal of the statue occupies a small part of the edge of the coin. On the left is the logo of the 2004 Olympic Games “ATHENS 2004” with the five Olympic Rings and on the right is the inscription in Greek “2 euro” (2 ΕΥΡΩ). On either side of the star at the bottom centre is the year of issue, separated by the star into two groups of numerals: 20*04. The mint mark is above the head of the discus thrower to the left. On the base plate on which the thrower stands are the initials of the designer Panagiotis Gravalos (on the left) and those of the sculptor Kostas Kazakos (on the right).
