Subject of the commemorative coin:
40th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution
Description:
The two arches represent the shape of a carnation, the flower that symbolises the revolution and gave it its name. The name of the issuing country, ‘PORTUGAL’, and the coat of arms are displayed at the top of the flower. The date of the revolution, ‘25 DE ABRIL’ (25 April), is in the centre of the image, with the number of years that have passed since then, ‘40 ANOS’ (40 years), and the year of issuance, ‘2014’, underneath. The shape of the letters and numbers is inspired by the typeface used on posters and other media of political information 40 years ago, and symbolises the euphoria of the period immediately following the event. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
