Description of the design:
The coin commemorates the Year for Priests, proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI for the period 19 June 2009-19 June 2010, which concluded with an international gathering of priests attended by the Pope. This was on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of Jean Baptiste Marie Vianney.
The inner part of the coin depicts a shepherd pulling a lamb from a lion’s mouth. Two inscriptions are engraved around the design: the name of the issuing country “CITTA' DEL VATICANO” at the top and the subject of the commemorative coin “ANNO SACERDOTALE” at the bottom. To the left of the design is the year “2010”, below the design the mint mark “R” and to the right of the design the name of the designer “VEROI”. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
